What do you offer?

The Controller reports to the VP-Finance and manages the Association’s accounting and financial functions and finance staff.  This position assists the VP-Finance with the continual advancement of the department in future strategic directions.

The Controller is responsible for establishing and conforming to the Association’s accounting principles, practices and procedures. This position ensures all journal entries conform to company accounting policies and that the Association’s accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles and government reporting/remittance guidelines.

The Controller is required to work from the YMCA Corporate Services office and may occasionally travel to other branch offices.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a personal commitment to and understanding of the Y’s mission, vision, values, and participant outcomes.

 Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Monthly and annual financial reporting, account analysis, and benchmark analytics for Senior leader financial reports
  • Responsible for cheque-run reviews, statistical analysis of operations as well as preparation and support for funding or related budget and report requirements.
  • Supports VP-Finance in the provision of accurate and timely data and reports for effective communication of key issues to the CEO and Board.
  • Supports other members of the Senior Management Team with reports and analysis as requested.
  • Analyze financial results and trends; provide communication and report assistance for VP-Finance for Board and Board Committee needs.
  • Analyze operational statistics including membership, camp, and childcare registrations to help management to understand past revenue and predict future revenue.
  • Monitor credit card activity, card maintenance, and reports on late payments.
  • Oversee daily operations of the finance department.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate accounting staff.
  • Work with Dynamics Great Plains and Excel to improve accounting and reporting efficiencies and business processes.
  • Work with front office systems/teams to ensure effective use of the system within programs and facilities.
  • Primary contact for internal departments and other managed charities.
  • Respond to external customer and supplier inquiries as needed.
  • Regular communication with Association’s banking representatives, and other related contacts.
  • Provide instruction and leadership related to accounting functions such as accounts payable, cash flow, bank reconciliation, deferred revenue, etc. as directed by the VP-Finance
  • Provides instruction and training to various Association Supervisors related to financial reporting and budgeting
  • Develop guidelines for review by the VP-Finance for accounting practices and policies; responsible for ensuring Association’s accounting principles and policies are upheld

 What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

 The successful candidate will have the following:


  • Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field
  • Professional accounting designation – CPA


  • Fluent in English, oral and written is essential
  • Other languages are considered an asset

 Experience, Abilities & Skills

  • Excellence in budgeting and forecasting (both finances and operational statistics), general accounting, and operational efficiency.
  • Minimum 7-10 years of relevant work experience in an accounting department.
  • Work experience in the non-profit/charitable sector is considered an asset.
  • Supervisory experience is mandatory.
  • Significant hands-on experience using accounting software such as SAP, Oracle, or Great Plains.
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and strong functionality with other MS Office products.
  • Requires highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills to reconcile various funding and revenue sources, and expense streams.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple reporting requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required 
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons and submit the certificate of completion.
