About Outdoor Day Camps

YMCA Camp Otonabee Day Camps offer general programs for campers who want to participate in all aspects of camp, and specialty programs for campers who would like to build skills within specific disciplines.

General Programs (Ages: 4Y-13Y) 
Our General Programs offer campers the opportunity to participate in several different areas of camp which allow for a diverse experience. Select programs are offered in French and English.

Specialty Programs (Ages: 6Y-13Y) 
Our Speciality Programs campers to concentrate on high ropes challenge courses, paddle sports, nature and arts programming, and more!

General Programs - Ages: 4Y-11Y

Every Wednesday at YMCA Camp Otonabee is a theme day! At the beginning of every week, themes will be announced on the Y Camps Ottawa Facebook page and in notes home.

The Kinder program introduces our youngest campers to all aspects of camp in a fun and safe environment! This program promotes gross motor development, active learning, and cooperative play. Kinders will be participating in a variety of games and outdoor activities which include: cooperative games, arts and crafts, nature hikes, swimming, canoeing, our Kinder Adventure Structure, and our age-appropriate high rope element, “The Flying Squirrel”! Our Kinders will have the opportunity to participate in all of these great programs and more throughout their week with us here at YMCA Camp Otonabee! Staff to camper ratio is 1:6.

Our New Discoveries have the opportunity to participate in several different areas of camp including: cooperative games, low ropes challenge courses, canoeing, swimming, fire and stuffy shelter building, nature hikes, orienteering and our age-appropriate high rope element, “The Flying Squirrel”! Staff to camper ratio is 1:8.

The Pioneers program provides an opportunity for junior campers to exercise a little more independence and experience new challenges. While ensuring low camper to counsellor ratios and age-appropriate programs, campers will participate in rock climbing, canoeing, orienteering, swimming, low ropes challenges, arts and crafts, archery, nature programs and much more! Staff to camper ratio is 1:10.

Explorers is designed as a well-rounded program for campers who want a general experience of YMCA Camp Otonabee! Our Explorers have the opportunity to participate in many different areas of camp including: cooperative games, low ropes challenge courses, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fire and shelter building, nature programs, orienteering, and one of our high ropes challenge courses! Staff to camper ratio is 1:10.

This program is facilitated in French and offers campers an opportunity to experience all age-appropriate aspects of Camp Otonabee. Similar to General Programs, campers will participate in activities like swimming, low ropes, cooperative games, nature hikes, canoeing, a group campfire and an age-appropriate high rope element! This program is suitable for Francophone or bilingual campers. Staff to camper ratio is 1:8.

Specialty Programs - Ages: 6Y-11Y

In partnership with Project Learning Tree Canada facilitators, this program is an opportunity for campers to explore our natural world and learn outdoor living skills. Camper’s time will be spent on nature inspired activities such as nature walks, forest exploration, microsite investigations, nature art and shelter building. Campers will also have an opportunity to experience high ropes, swimming, and canoeing! The staff to camper ratio for this program is 1:8.

This program’s focus is on high ropes challenge courses and an introduction to climbing. Campers will learn useful climbing knots, climbing safety, and will have the opportunity to experience a variety of our high ropes courses climbing various high and low rope elements throughout the week. Adventure Campers will also have the opportunity to participate in classic camp activities such as swimming, canoeing, cooperative team building games, and archery. The staff to camper ratio for this program is 1:10.

This program’s emphasis is on the acquisition of paddling skills in canoeing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. The focus will be on instruction to basic strokes, navigation, and boater safety. Every day will have a different boating activity and multiple canoeing periods throughout the week to build proficiency. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in a culminating day-trip from our beach on the Ottawa River. Paddle Sport campers will also have the opportunity to participate in other aspects of camp such as swimming, cooperative team building games, low ropes and shelter building. The staff to camper ratio for this program is 1:10.

This program is an opportunity for campers ages 8Y-11Y who identify as girls to enjoy traditional camp activities together. Activities include canoeing, swimming, orienteering, arts and crafts and more! Campers will also have the chance to experience one of our high ropes challenge courses. This program is designed for children who would like to combine dramatic arts with the experience of an outdoor camp. Each week campers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of drama and movement activities. They will be challenged to work as a team to write, direct, and create a performance at camp at the end of each week! Drama campers will also participate in traditional camp activities, such as low ropes, boating, swimming, and cooperative games. The staff to camper ratio for this program is 1:10.

Extended Day Camp |  Ages 4Y-16Y

Extended Day Camp is available in the morning (7AM-9AM) and afternoon (4PM-6PM) for all day campers to accommodate parents’/guardians’ schedules. Additional costs apply.

To register for Extended Day Camp, select the appropriate section when completing the registration process.

Camper Care Program  |  Ages: 4Y-13Y

This program is for campers who need extra support while they are at camp. Each camper is assessed independently and assigned a one-to-one camp counsellor who will accompany and help integrate them into programming with other campers in their age group.

This program has a separate application and registration process and limited space. Applications are reviewed on a first come, first served basis and space is limited.

Please note that our staff are not trained to assist with medical equipment or procedures (such as g-tube feeding or catheter care) and are unable to provide full washroom assistance, including lifting, wiping, or diaper changes.
