Housing Services

A safe place to call home.

In the late 1800s, the YMCA and YWCA were founded in Ottawa in response to a need for shelter for men and women. Since then, the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region has provided housing services to our community.

Located in the Taggart Family Y, the Shenkman Residence offers community housing services including a family emergency shelter, a youth transitional housing program, supportive housing floors, and a supportive housing program for women.

The Shenkman Residence provides stability to people in our community who are at risk of homelessness or living in unstable/unsafe housing. We welcome families, newcomers to Canada, individuals in transition, and individuals coping with issues related to physical/mental health or substance abuse.

Working with our community partners, the Y provides affordable, safe housing in an environment that promotes mutual respect, support and tolerance.
